Our Starlight 35 had been converted to a 'Beneteau' type before we got her. There are two types available, one type with flutes that run along the length of the bearing, the other is hexagonal. We've always had the fluted type but have just bought a new propshaft as it was worn by the bearing. I'm wondering if the hexagonal type may allow more water to flow though the bearing. There is a hole in the sterntube which, I believe is to allow water in for this reason. Any thought?

Some bearing tubes and cutless bearings are pumped from the engine cooling system, but those are in the hull volume. Where is the hole in your S35 configuration ? Is there one in the little skeg ? If that is the water induction hole it ,might be worth checking that it is not blocked with barnacles.

The hole is about half way down the sterntube. Before I reassemble it with the new shaft I plan to hose and brush out the whole tube and ensure the hole is clear. I may also consider opening it out slightly. Apparently some Beneteau motorboats have a scoop on the inlet to feed water into the sterngland and presumably down to the cutlass bearing.
At present I'm just hoping to find the pros and cons of each type of bearing. It seems to me, the fluted ones have more contact area and the hexagonal have more water to lubricate and cool them.
