Beneteau Ombine - Thoughts please.

It occured to me as I lay upside down in the hole whence the fridge had come from whilst re-wiring the shore-power and 12v aux circuits that whilst boating is supposed to be a pleasure, currently a good weekend is one where I don't actually slice my finger to the bone as opposed to merely nick it with some tool or other.

Caution (and £5 Mr Steward) to the wind - Beneteau Ombine 9.60, thoughts anyone? There is one for sale, a 2001 with 40 hours on the meters. Not a lot of details yet but next Saturday is going to be our look at new boats day, and this boat sounds nice in the write up. Any one know the hull / build?

BTW - On Sunday I was putting the old Stag though its pre-MOT checks etc.. when I spied the Mercury 9.5hp engine in the back of the garage. Bet it doesn't run I thought. So being wary of running it without water I plugged in the fuel tank and pulled it through about 20 times. On the 21st it coughed and started running - I selected forward slow and the prop spun as well. Glory be something that works off MVII without needing to be hit first! Shut it down almost straight away but know I can't wait to inflate the dinghy and give it a whirl. 9.5hp on a dinghy rated to 5hp - shall I get SWMBO to up my life insurance?

Hmm new boat...

Re: pah. It\'ll be fine.

We bombed around with a 15hp on a dinghy rated at 8, no prob at all. Think these limits are for their insurance thingys, and no prob provided you don't leap over waves. Sermons begins. The dinghy must be inflated so sodding hard that you can't make a dent in it with your fingers. Not a bad idea with splooshy spalshy boat like that to have a body buoyancy thing, instead of spensive autoinflaty inflaty thing. Never ever drive it without kill cord of course, and when plonking engine onto boat put a rope round it in case u lose yer balance and the engine sinks before even attached to dinghy. That bracket thing on back of yr boat is specially for that o/board. You cd just ow the dinghy around around for short distance, but make sure any towline line is yellow (to see it) and floaty (so it doesn't go round props so easy). It will plane, i reckon, with just you on, just, which is very jolly fun.

Hmm you ask about the Beneteau, and get lots of replies about over powered inflatables. Par for the course I suppose!

I've looked at the Ombrine, was 900 at one time, and have been most impressed. On my short list when circumstances allow me to trade up.

Have crawled over the vessels at Southampton, and looks very nice. I like all the wood, though not everyone's taste, I'm told they increased the size of the swim platform on the 900, and called it the 960. MBY reviewed the 900 a while back, and threw it around the Solent, in usual way, and found some of the interior fitments came apart. Beneteau took up the points and made mods, invited MBY to factory to check. MBY then gave thumbs up.

My only criticism, the helm seat doesn't look up to much, but until you've been out in one, can't really tell.

If you've found a 'pre-owned' one, and price is good, worth looking at, I would say.

Nice boat now, after mods from Beneteau. would go for twin diesels or at least KAD 300.

Haggle with them I'm sure they'll come down in price and dont tell them hat you have paid for MVII, let them give you a price first.

If you're considering buying from your "local" beneteau dealer, I wish you much better service than we ever got when looking at smaller ombrines......actually, you probably would get good service: we were always kept waiting/ignored 'cos the guy was attending to "commissioning problems" on larger boats.

On another note : can this be the same BarryD who said recently
"Until last August I'd only be on a couple of broads weeks, so boat ownership and usage is very much a new thing.......quite likely to sink someone in the process.....".

9.6m .....do you really think that's wise ?<G>

Hi Andy - yep its the same one - but if I've not sunk anyone in MVII then another couple of metres won't make a lot of difference. RASH words <G> as my sea time is quite small. But everyone keeps telling me that twins are easier to drive than singles. Course the Beneteau is just one option, but it looks nice. Also looking at new Bayliners, Rinkers, Fairline etc...

Re: Too small!

At teh risk of yet another lashing from BarryD, this won't do at all. A 9.6 is only slightly bigger than the rinker 7.6. Much better to get a totally monstrous boat of truly cadillacian proportions. Like I said last year. This will cure any thoughts of further upgrades. Indeed, had he heeded my advice last year, poor Barry wouldn't now be in the position of um having a cadillac...

If you want a better price try phoning Jean Marc the Beneteau dealer in St Malo, save on delivery by collecting it yourself.

Re:Stop Press

Probably get stopped and asked for you private pilots licence! Or by somebody who would ask "is sir having difficulty taking off" as I was on a triumph around heathrow!

Beneteau Ombrine - designer hotel

Very fine boat imho. As someone said, the MBY test boat came quite badly apart, so beware that problem. Most stylish machine though, interieur by none other than Philippe Starck, so if you are a regular at the Royalton (or, in MrsD's case, the Mondrian is more likely), you will feel most at home.

Re: BarryD- Thoughts please.

Barry, you say boating's supposed to be a pleasure, and it sounds like you don't enjoy the occasional bit of wiring......out of interest......why do you do it yourself ? or has it been one problem after another?

Re: BarryD- Thoughts please.

Hi Andy call it frustration - also don't really know any firms in the area yet and when I've asked for recomendations all I get is drivel - which is only fair as I contribute a lot of drivel to other threads myself. I'm quite happy doing wiring (restored 90% of the shore power capability) and playing with greasy bits. Can't wait for summer - even if were still in MVII it will be a blast.

Re:BarryD-electrics

I don't know any good firms for it either-I do my own anyway (ex-motorcycle electrician-so I've all the stuff).

I know of a guy who's rewiring a farley of fife motorboat next to me at the yard......he seems very knowledgeable, albeit busy with Byoris-I'll ask if he's after any other work.
