Bought one secondhand in 2004 and so far very happy with it.
If you are buying one watch out for the options i.e. shallow/deep keel, small or tall mast, 28HP or 38HP engine.
I have the deep keel, tall mast and 38HP engine. I gather there are some around with tall mast and shallow keel that are very difficult to sail! The smaller engine is popular if only racing but is a bit underpowered.
Generally a great all rounder. Still competitive for racing (1st, 2nd and 3rd in their IRC class in Cowes week) but also a fast comfortable cruising boat. No running backstays, check stays etc.
The previous owner of our boat set it up for both with all the cruising bits removable. Whilst we are generally set up for racing a couple of hours converts to a cruising boat by adding cockpit lockers, spray hood, roller reef jib, fully battened main with lazy jacks, electric anchor windlass, dinghy and davits!
The only draw back we have found to date is the lack of a large cockpit locker (two aft cabins). If only cruising the shallow draft at 1.9m might be better than our 2.4m
I had a day out on the very boats mentioned above at Cowes Week, class win on the day and overall 2nd in class for week. OK it was sorted for racing but I was quite impressed, dont think I would buy one cos I havent got that sort of money.
I have spotted a really nice Gibsea 31, 1990 boat..anybody know much about that model?
