Hi, I'm considering buying a Beneteau 390 1989, does anyone have any advice (good or bad) about this boat. I currently own a Jeanneau Sundream 28 so am aware of the usual AWB's issues.

Worth cheacking but I thought that it was the 390 oceanis that had pretty bad stability rating? a couple turned over in rough Biscay crossings?
If it is the same boat/hull shape maybe its not the nbest boat for ocaen crossings or rough stuff.
It might be worth checking, somebody will know. Otherwise old AWB's are great, much better built than the new ones. We had a 91 Bav.

Yes, I have also heard rumblings about this although we do not intend to do any long ocean passages at this stage. I have also heard that the in mast reefing fitted on some of these boats can seriously effect the stability. Thanks for you comments.

Hi

I don't know how similar the 390 is, but I have a 1987 Oceanis 350. It is a lovely boat to sail, definitely seems to be quicker than any of the newer (albeit sunsail charter versions) Oceanis 331 and the like I have sailed in recent past. It does like to be sailed flat'ish and we do now reef quite early, but it does not affect the turn of speed. Some of the key things I like is the quality of joinery below. It beats the pants of anything done recently by beneteau or jeannau (both of which I have chartered in the last couple of years). It is sturdier, slightly overspec'd and better made. This also goes for the rigging, anchor roller, stern roller and other fittings and fixtures. It is not as roomy as modern version, but still has impressive space below. I think it was a lot of boat for my money and I love it to bits....

>>>> As longer term forumites will recall, Stingo generated this same discussion in respect of his boat 18 months ago! He hasn't reported any stability problems so far - though

Stingo encountered some stability problems at the Cherbourg party last year. Put twenty or more guests on the same rail during a party and a Benny 390 will dip her rail.

Looking at an example from 1986 . What should I concentrate on??
Any history of osmosis on the 390??
How is the rigging??
Anyone with a comment would be much appreciated.

It was actually more serious than you suggest. During the inclining experiment, Stingo's electric toothbrush launched itself from its stowage and ended up down the pan. You have been warned...

There's nothing wrong with a 390. I've just crossed the pond in one and I was single handed and it was in the hurricane season.

If you do a search on the MCA site for Oceanis 390 and if you read between the lines of their report, you will see that it was the skippers fault entirely - inexperienced crew at the wheel, sailing across the breaking waves (will roll any boat), washboards not secured in place...

The real problem with the 390 is that it has suffered from the workmen blaming the tool. Me thinks that the workmen are tools.
