For the record, I have just changed the cutlass bearing on my381, I got it from Lake Engineering in Poole, £23 plus VAT. It is 30mm ID by 40mm OD by 100mm long

wow! How ?

i'm curious as this is next week end's job -- i assume you ahve to t ake off the propeller and work the c b out of the p bracket that holds the c b.

did you have to use a cutless bearing puller of any sort?
how did you get old c b out ??

was the c bearing an interference fit?

having just spent 2 1/2 hrs trying to get a propeller nut off i am envious of those who have managed to do this whole job....

Just got back from Milford
The nut is locked with a tab washer, just bend it back with a screwy. I used mine a couple of times. The bearing is held in place with 2 6mm plastic screws (the same as they use to hold number plates on) You can peel it out with a screwdriver easily.

cutless bearing puller tool..

ah i envy you an easy c b pull. well i spent a few hrs with all manner of shop tools and still couldn't get the c b out. have now sprung the $ from the spouse for purchase of a beautiful c b removal tool . since my c b is a tight press fit i could not get it out with any of the home remedies -- pull with needle nose pliers, try sawing apart with small hacksaw..try tapping out. 3 hrs later off to buy the tool and it is a beauty..can also be used for reinstall of the 'press fit. so i guess i'll keep the boat for the remainder o my life since i now have the 2 special tools for its propeller removal (flexofold prop puller tool) and its cutless bearing...o well the 2 tools were less than 5 hrs of mechanic time .

and yes i DID first remove the one set screw thru the p strut, which was holding the c b inside the p strut....

If youve got a P bracket the above instructions dont apply, all the modern benes and jeanneaus are easy to replace

Stu,
I envy you. How did you manage to pull the old cutlass bearing (I am sure you did that without removing the shaft)? On my Beneteau 361 the "hat" from the c.b is gone and while the boat was out of the water I did not manage to pull the stupid rubber out from the shaft. I removed the two screws of course but it was stuck and any attempt to remove it (with a little screwdriver) was simply destroying it. So I just left it for next year!!

PS: If I manage to destroy it and therefore need to remove the shaft.....meaning dropping the ludder.....oh, I don't wanna think about this.

Easy peasy, I did it on my 351, (a rope had gone around the prop and then the shaft, pushing the lot up the tube) Just get two big self tapper screws, drill a pilot hole in the rubber bit, screw the screws in then use mole grips and a big screwdriver as a lever and it comes out relatively easy.
