I need to replace the Volvo shaft seal on a Beneteau 36CC. Does anyone know how the half coupling is retained on the prop shaft? I can see a keyway (I haven't dismantled anything yet - boat is still in the water) can't see anything else. I do hope it's not shrunk on!

If it's like my Jeanneau, with no pinch bolts in the half coupling, it will be a taper with a nut accessible when you separate the coupling.
Loosen the nut, put a packer in, do up the coupling bolts again and it should push out. Maybe a knock on the side to encourage it but have an opposing weight so it doesn't shock the bearings.

Yes exactly that. It is similar to the other side of the shaft where the prop is (but not exactly same). There could be some kind of 'cap' on the shaft when you undo the coupling from the reverse gear box.
And the method Troubadour describes will do the trick.
