I must replace the cutlass bearing of my Beneteau Oceanis 361. The "edge" of the bearing was destroyed so you cannot actually try pulling it from there. I must find a way to pull the rubber from inside the tube. Any thoughts of doing this without removing completely the shaft (and therefore the rudder).

The boat doesn't have a P bracket. It's the shaft coming out of the boat and then the propeller (don't remember how is called). All techniques to remove it only speak about P brackets.

Its easy, dont need to remove the shaft, all you do is remove the prop, (probably need a 3 leg puller) undo 2 plastic screws going through the mini skeg in to the rubber cutlass bearing, use a flat bladed screw driver at the edge of the "top hat" to ease it out, its only about 70 mm long, it comes out easily. Put some volvo blue grease on the inside and outside of the new bearing, push it in and replace the screws, replace the prop and away you go. On the 361 I think its either 30mm or 35 mm, best got from Foxs on the east coast, about £27 ish, give em a bell they will tell which one it is. I replaced the one on my 351 twice and they were the cheapest and the fastest. The reson for the second replacement was because the tosser next to me a few years ago left a 10mm braid line in the water and when my prop picked it up it went in between the prop and the bearing and forced it all up the skeg, getting that lot out involved the use of long thin self tappers in the manner of packing removers. Sorry just read your post again, I suspect you have the same prob as me with a rope around the shaft. OK start again get the prop off, get two LONG self tappers, you will find that you can screw them in to the old bearing up the skeg, get a pair of mole wrenches on the screws, wiggle and pull and tap etc, it will come out believe me, slowly but surely, as i explained been there done it.!!!

I had a similar problem on my 331 when I lost the "top hat" up into the tube due to a rope round the prop. I cut the top hat off with a narrow chisel then I eased out the remains of the bearing by using small screwdrivers in the holes at the side where the plastic screws go. It took a couple of hours but I didn't need to disturb the Volvo seal etc inside the boat.

hey Heckler
Do you have a website for fox’s to order from ? I’m not sure where you are located when youu is say fox’s on east coast ? I’ve got a 351 and need to order a new bearing and since you’ve done yours twice figure you should know !
If you can send it to me at billymc38@yahoo.com that would be great .
I’m on east coast of USA North Carolina .
Saw your post and it’s really helpful .
Thank you
