Caught the end of a call to solent coast guard yesterday. Boat had broken down and was going through the usual slow conversation with solent. Boat advised he couldn't deploy anchor without the engine running. Boat is a benetau series 9 so somehow I doubt that fact.

Wonder how many boaters don't know how to deploy an anchor manually.?

It will say in the manual to have the engine running but it is not necessary.

A prudent sailor will start the engine first in case the battery are about flat and running the windlass takes the last ergs.

guess he she was physically disabled or mentally challenged to be unable to pull a few meters of chain out and chuck the anchor over the side

I heard the same call. Frankly was appalled by response from Solent Coat Guard and their phasing about! The caller gave his physical position as being just off the starting platform at the entrance to Lymington. The CG operator asked for the lat and long, clearly he did not know the actual location. I see this as now becoming an issue as clearly the new operators have no idea where these places are.

The operator then asked questions that frankly appeared to come off a script and had no idea of the actual realities. There needs to be a shake up! More to the point, better training. By the time the CG had given some kind of response the vessel concerned had arranged a tow from Lymington.

All the A9s I've seen including ours have windlass with a simple manually operated free fall deployment with a clutch to control the fall rate and a manual handle for recovery in case of failure In fact I never use the "power deploy" feature. Also they are a very safe boat to go forward on so it does seem odd.

Making wild assumptions, I'm guessing:

Boater thinks CG imperative is: "get me home." Like calling the AA or, err, Sea Start. And what mariners have done since Noah no longer applies: i.e. deploy the anchor, if necessary by the lucky coincidence of gravity in the absence of motorised help in order to hook on to something that will broadly arrest the process of getting deeper into the doodoo.

New Model CG don't have massive familiarity with the area and can't deploy Google to work out that Lym starting platform is kinda quite near Lymington, a well-known coastal town in Hampshire on the south coast of Ingerland.

Of course, I might be wrong...

My impression is that Fareham have an on-screen combined script/form, and it has a box for lat/long which they have to fill in. They can be quite insistent in asking for this, even where it's of no practical use (eg, casualty vessel already under tow with lifeboat on-scene) and the location is obvious (in the Lymington river).

I'm sure the old Solent had to record positions too, but they were more willing to simply take a look at the chart based on a description and pick off a reasonable lat and long themselves without bothering the casualty if it wasn't necessary.

For the record I have a Beneteau sports cruiser and there is a cut out which stops the anchor winch operating unless the engines are running. Not commenting on the manual deployment option obviously.

Lymington seems to be a problem area for them http://www.ybw.com/forums/showthread.php?439734-Another-Solent-CG-concern
