bendix not engaging

Very odd because the drive gear engaged into the flywheel by action of the solenoid and the starter motor is only activated when the drive gear is fully home. (hence the team pre-engage starter motor)
So don’t understand why it is spinning unless you have flywheel teeth missing which would be even more unusual.
I await further theories.
Just as an aside bendix is the term for the old inertia starter motor drive.

I'd check with a voltometer what's on the terminals when you crank first before getting into theorising...
Had a similar situation last year, one engine would occasionally "miss" the teeth (my take of the sound I was hearing) so starter would spin fast, but not engaged to flywheel.
Turned out that it was due to a dodgy B2B custom box that was used to charge the generator battery and was dropping SOC of the starter batteries.
Removed it, charged them properly, never happened again.
Maybe earth to that motor needs a check/clean/tightening? Or V+ cable on either battery or starter end

V.
