I need to bend some 50mm wide stainless strip 4mm thick into some u shaped brackets with 90 degree angles - is stainless (304) best bent cold or heated. If heated is best, what sort of temperature and is it necessary to anneal or heat treat after bending?

I am sure you are aware but you can't bend 4mm SS into a perfect 90 degree angle, the best you can do is produce a radius curve which gives a 90 degree return.

You need to find the bending allowance and add that into any width calculation before bending. I do have the information at work, but not with me at home - sorry.

If you know someone who has a Zeus Book (most engineers) the information is contained within it.

And I agree with bending it cold.

Hope this helps.

I've done perfect 90º bends with the help of my big vice and lump hammer. But a metal fabricator will do a neater job cheaply.
