Hi all, i am at the stage i am ready to do hull repairs below the water line on an old cabin cruiser, a Buckingham 20, around 40 years old. so a few questions

Is it true that these old GRP boats were made with polyester resin and not epoxy?

If it is made from Poly resin then it is best to use poly resin to repair it and not epoxy, as epoxy will not adhere to some old poly resin?

The repairs i am doing is on old patch`s from a long time ago, they are not blended in so i want to redo them but with no gel coat and use Jotun Vinyguard 88 primer.

thanks for any advice

It will have been made using polyester resin. Epoxy costs LOTS more.

But for repairs use epoxy as it sticks to cured polyester resin much better than polyester resin.

I use West system epoxy but there are other brands, some are cheaper.

West have some good help guides see http://www.westsystem.com/ss/boat-repair/

Bang on the money.

I am having good results from Gurit epoxy SP106 with the fast hardener.
