BEFORE repainting name

I read with interest the post and replies on repainting a boat's name
as I have in mind to change the name of the home port on my boat.

I have my existing boat name and home port in "stick on" plastic letters.

Any suggestions as to how best to remove the letters I don't want
before attempting replacement?

I have to do the same and I was recommended to use a hair dryer to soften the vinyl although I haven't actually got round to trying this yet!

Removed vinyl stripes last year to replace and used low seting on hot air gun.No prolems or damages.Used white spirit then just to remove sticky residus left

The stick-on jobbies come off fairly easily with hair-dryer heat.

I used a wallpaper stripper - but I was also planning on re-doing the paint underneith so I wasn't bothered about the marks it made.

I think had I wanted to take them off "clean" I could have done so by hand, but it would have taken a while!

try a kettle of hot water......

Just in case you don't have access to shore power for the hair dryer, several applications of boiling water from the kettle, and a nice hot sponge cloth will also do the job.

Hot air gun, it will soften then enough to remove them, then a bit of cellulose thinners will get rid of the residue. One little point, the name will still be on the boat, the paint around the letters will have faded, that under it won't! You will need to T cut the area, to try and get rid of the old name, but even then, its difficult, without repainting the area! Good luck.
