Just thought I would share this discovery with you lot. Over that last few years I have been using some gun mastic on the boat for anything that needs to be bedded but removal in the future.

The stuff is called 'Soveriegn Builders Mastic', obviously made by Sovereign chemicals and available in many builders merchants. Its a bit like very soft putty. It will skin over where exposed to the air but stay compleyely soft between mating surfaces.

Its brilliant for bedding things down, or glazing with beading etc and based on experience so far I can highly recommend it. It costs about £2.00 per large size tube.

Cheers

I've used Expansion joint sealant. It sets, but remains elastic - can be deformed 300%.

Plumber's mate doesn't seem to quite set totally.

Like all building silicones, it can't be painted over

Probably a Butyl based compound as you describe it Mike. Plumbers mate is indeed much the same and is also Butyl based. Expansion joint sealant is usually Polysulphide which is paintable but sometimes silicone is specified which of course is not.
