becoming anti internet

My waning interest and increasing irritability with the internet and associated gadgets has been compounded since Xmas with a new Asus tab!et, wifi only, which, apart from causing constant frustration compared with a previous Blackberry playbook, is almost entirely invisible in sunlight which is not good in the Med where I have been permanent liveaboard for 18 years. Each time I make a techiebreakthrough, I get ever more questions and complications.

I admit to being a very senior citizen, and all that implies.

I would just LURVE to find a tab!et sized device which is cheap, extremely easy to use, and visible in outdoor cafes that offers a bare minimum service. I happily use prepaid sim cards for 3 different countries to stay in touch with my nearest and dearest.

How about Kindle Fire? What would you advise for your favourite aged relative?

Thanks

Sad to say, but cheap and usability are mutually exclusive.

I am not a fan of Apple products, but the Ipad does what you want - you see BBC folks using them on the open air when doing OBs.

I know of no LCD sceen which can be read in full Mediterranean sunlight - even the famous Apple Retina screen is illegible in full Med sunlight.

I think you'll need to revise your browsing habits and face up to age-related myopia - if you look again @ your Blackberry screen I think you'll find it less satisfactory than it used to be.
Some laptops have the ability to boost brightness - if you choose a business laptop with a matt screen you'll probably find it more easy to read in sunlight.
Try getting a sun-hood for a laptop or tablet.

We have a Kindle Fire, principally to hold our ebooks. The screen is not readable in full Med sunlight but otherwise it's great for email and web access, SWMBO used to do the Facebook thing on it too before she got a smartphone. Like most wifi devices with a built-in antenna it's range from a hotspot is not good, but in cafes etc. it's ideal.

I have iPad mini 3, iPhone 5S and iPad 4 - and the iPad mini 3 has easily the best screen. I use the iPad mini 3 for flying (in Africa under very bright sun) and can see it easily in the aircraft cockpit, whereas I the iPhone 5S is a fair bit less easy to see, and the iPad 4 not easy at all.
