Last Sunday, as the weather was completely dire, I cancelled sailing and instead went to have a look at the site of the new Beaumaris marina on Anglesey at Gallows Point. It certainly looks like an attractive site - excellent scenery of Snowdonia and the Great Orme, protected water in the Menai Straights, no tidal access restrictions, 10 minutes walk into Beaumaris itself, 10 minutes drive from the A55.

Nothing has been started yet though, and looking at the plans there is a lot of work to do, a haven has to be built from scratch. The expected opening is not until 2005, which sounds a long time away. Wish that they could hurry up!

Holyhead Marina is coming along slowly. When the finances/funds for Gallows Point are sorted out the new marina will be more than welcome. The next and most probably last* marina in and around Anglesey will be the completion of Victoria Dock (Caernarfon) ostensibly by Watkins Jones when they build the new liesure complex between Safeway's and the Castle. (Given Watkins Jones insensitivity at Port Dinorwic, I wonder what monumental visual travesty they will come up with next a World Heritage site.)

*Note: Porth Dinllaen could be a contender for a a new marina as it was considered as the natural ferry port to Ireland prior to Holyhead.

What about...

...the marina planned for Bangor? I understand that this would be well underway and funded privately but for politics, appears that the councils on Anglesey are more forward thinking than some others. Not complaining about Public funding mind you, especially when it creates new marinas. There is a new smaller one going ahead at Pwllheli & one planned for Barmouth.

i think it is all sorted now. there was mention of an issue with the mussell fishers who hadlaid a claim to part fo the intended area. there was also the issue of the SAC conservation area. but i agree it is a good idea. holyhead also could do with the pontoons. although it could be considered a bit soouthern solent softy.

Re: What about...

Was the planned one in Bangor going to be in the dock opposite Dickies? The dock looks little used now and could do with a revamp.

I didn't know a new marina was planned for Pwllheli. Is it going to be an extention of the current one or is the bit where the drying moorings are going to be dug out? There is a lot of unused sheltered water there, even if it is full of mud at the moment.

If all the planned ones go ahead, including Barmouth and Fishguard, there will be a lot more easily visited places. Could turn the area into a Welsh Solent. Oh no!

Press announcement

A well-known yacht charter, training and flotilla company announced today that it was undertaking a feasibility study to base a fleet of Ohmigawd 36s in North Wales/Anglesea area.

Rich Pickings, a spokesmen for the company said "There is a large untapped catchment area for potential sailors in the Greater Manchester and Merseyside areas, as well as some quite couth people with surprisingly nice houses living in Cheshire. We strongly believe that these Northern Folk would appreciate the jolly nautical camraderie and baddinage which our Solent customers enjoy throughout the year. For us the North Wales coast has many attractions: small pubs which our crews can easily overwhelm; quaint coastal communities which could do with a bit of livening up; boat owners with low insurance premiums (at the moment); and wide open waters which are not full of crusty old sailors like what get up our noses in the Solent."

Mr Pickings is 19 1/2 years old, and has already sailed one leg of the classic Cowes-Hamble yacht race.

Re: What about...

Yep, it was the Dickies one at Bangor, good site, refurbishmed of course.

The one at PW will be accessed from in front of the council offices and managed by Haven as the main one is now. Manily for shallower draft boats. Part of the new 'Island' will be cut back and a hotel cum health club etc built on it.

The pub is called Ty Coch and is one of those "most photographed place in Wales" scenarios.

Barmouth Marina would be good, also I read in a mag that there has been a new one open in Arcklow/Wicklow - can't remember which.

Re: Press announcement

well done ken that gave me a good laugh that

although you made no mention that some sections of the birmingham navy also turn up just to keep ILB busy dragging them back to shore.
