Why don't you just head out of Portsmouth till you're clear of the shallow bits to the west of the entrance, then turn right and drive down the Solent till you can see the dolphin off Beaulieu?

If you're going reasonably direct then you'll be clear of the Brambles, and there's nothing else to hit unless you start slaloming through the moorings off Cowes.

I'm all for taking navigation seriously, but robotically following a set of predetermined bearings for a sunny day trip in the Solent strikes me as a little absurd.

Hi John, as Pete says, all pretty straight forward. Your Waypoints should see you ok. You are aware of any hazards, watch out for high speed ferries off Cowes (you no doubt know Ryde)

You'll love the river. I do! The channel mainly marked by withies (sticks). Overnight at anchor (down near Lepe) or at Bucklers Hard, if staying.

If not more than about 25ft and 3ft draft, you can get up to Beaulieu villiage, on spring highs. The double high tides means you have about 3hrs there, leave as soon as water starts to fall.

If and when you do go, photos would be great. I didn't get up there this year.

Well, you have the right idea. Just miss Brambles, and if low water dont cut inside Lepe, but both are ok if the tide is in.
Its pretty shallow outside the deeper bit into the river, so again watch your depth if you wander off and it is very low water.
The river is easy and beautiful, but again just watch the markers at lower water, especially on the way out;can be easy to miss one if you arent paying attention.
It is going to have to be a very low tide or you half asleep for anything to go wrong on this trip ;)

The only buoys you will find in the river are mooring buoys. The channel is marked by posts and withies.

Nearly - there is a stbd channel marker buoy half a mile or so up-river of Buckler's Hard, if you go that far. It's there for a purpose, so ignore it at your peril :)

There's a webcam at Buckler's Hard - on this page - if you want to check out conditions in advance :)

Getting in and out at low water springs can be nervy. Coming out, just after the 90 degree turn I've seen 1m before now, but I think that is unusual conditions. Lovely up the river though, nice place.

That's a difficult one ! if you can time it right, and make it to Beauleigh, the pub there is good, can't remember its name, the something arms ?

Montague Arms at Beaulieu (Sorry if I've spelt your name wrong m'lord), not any better than Master Builders IMHO. It's a long but nice walk from Bucklers Hard to Beaulieu (in the summer).

The restaurant at the Master Builders ain't bad, but very pricey. The bar ain't up to much, and very pricey.

Best eat on board at Bucklers Hard, there is nowhere, unless you want to travel further (taxi).
