Bearing Tap 'removal' bolts - DP-G

Can anyone confirm if the bolts to be inserted to aid the removal of bearing tap on a DP-G (steering helmet) are 1/4UNC or M6? I Googled an old thread here and there was conflicting information!

(Lent them to a friend and he made bits of my old ones... can't remember the size)

N - Same as the cap head screws that you take out - use them (At least thats the case on DP-E)
More likely to be M6, VP had moved to all metric by then

tico - I'm ahead of you thinking of that, but my boat is still in the water!

I'm not changing the bellows this year but just want to have them for the next time i've the out-drive off.

On the DP-E they are long screws for the cap, on the DP-G they are short allen bolts. I'd prefer to buy a pack of them to have as spared for removing the bearing caps as people are constantly asking for a 'lend' of them!

You lend out your tools!! Nooooo. Politely ask them to leave their wife with you as security on said loan. That'll generally encourage them to buy their own. Works for me!

In fairness they were just 2 hex bolts. I don't lend out tools, for exactly the reason on what happened when I lent my very handy bearing tap removal bolts... broken!

So, any confirmation on whether you think they're M6 or 1/4 UNC?

PS. My gang are a bit too young for wives!

I believe 1/4 UNC still because the bearing cap replacement is the same for all drives and includes screws being

However threaded length is important to. i.e. not too long (IIRC 30mm) People use them to jack the bearing out but I would be concerned that could cause damage to the casing (crack or punch through) allowing water into casing and bellows if saltwater and corrosion seized the bearing. Better to screw in and using a small pry bar gently twist from side to side to loosen. You'll note that the replacement screws have a long shoulder to prevent over jacking
