Following on from Shy Talk's thread if anybody else wants a copy of the spreadsheet it is here. It is based on plane geometry so only valid over short distances. I'm not an ocean navigator but I understand that this type of calculation is used for distances of up to about 600nm. I've tested it against the routeing function on a hand held GPS and it seems to be giving correct results. Any further testing or comments gratefully received.
