If you make your own - and it is a good idea. Be sure to make a small 'flat' or groove along it's length otherwise you are into 'hydraulic's' and they will not go all the way home or even worse you will split them trying

No, it's one of those new threads. Starts at the answer and slowly works its way to the question.

Next thing we'll be doing is starting off shouting at eachother, then gradually getting sweeter and calmer as we go along.

I think that there's some confusion here about plugs/dowels.

If dowels are being used (eg to fix two bits of wood together) then a groove is essential for the reason already given.

If plugs are being used (eg to fill in the hole for the head of a screw so that a smooth all wood surface is left) then a groove should not be needed. It could be argued that a groove could detract from both getting a good tight fit, and getting a good visually attractive finish. For what it's worth I think that it is worth lining up the grain on the plug with that of the "host" wood to get the neatest finish.
