Weather forecast looks great, especially Sunday! Saturday night Firework Display will be spectacular! Come and join me.
Don't forget to register with BCYA for half price berthing fees!
Well it appears nobody else has had time to comment, so I'll have a go!
The weekend seemed to go really well - the sun shone and the people came out, with the whole town buzzing for the whole week.
There was a good turnout from the BCYA boats (some even a week late which caused a few hiccups regarding the BCYA Rally but I think they sorted it all out), although the marina was not as busy as it has been previously, but I think that's the case with all marinas at the moment.
The activities arranged over the whole weekend were brilliant. Somehow they managed to get RAF Chivenor with the Sea King to perform some demonstrations with the Minehead Lifeboat for around 40 minutes which really kicked the whole weekend off nicely, especially the flypast at the beginning! (this was even more pleasing given that the helicopter was called off on a 'shout' 20 minutes before it's planned arrival, but luckilly it was then stood down).
Throughout the weekend the local Scouts got a lot of members of the public out on the water having a go in sailing dinghies and RIBs which has to be good for the sport. Also it was very entertaining to see a load of small hovercraft racing around Watchet's Outer Harbour - the noise certainly attracted people.
The mixture of other entertainment seemed to cater for all tastes and ages. It was good to see the Boat Museum heaving on the Saturday night with Sea Shanties, and the live music on both the Saturday and Sunday evenings was very well received. I think the Esplanade Club did well!
Finally I have to mention the fireworks. This is the first time in a number of years when there has been fireworks in Watchet, and in all honesty, I think anyone would struggle to say they weren't impressed - the display was magnificent and went on for quite a while, with some really big bangs! I was told that some boat owners said it was better than Dartmouth Regatta!
Sorry if this all sounds very positive, but I honestly can't think of any big negatives or issues. Yes the toilets and showers were busy but I guess that's just one of those things. The music might not have been to everyone's tastes but I thought the mix was pretty good, and I am always aware that you can't cater for everything.
IMHO well done to everyone at the marina and in the town - hope they're going to do it all again next year!
