BBC4 Sunsail

Go on, be honest. What's your relationship with them ?

(We haff vays of finding out, you know......)

I watched it and thought it didn't do Sunsail any good at all.

What the program said to me was:- poor management, poor organisation and poor planning.

Off topic but the 2007 award for best signature has to go to najs /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Honestly, it looked absolutely horrific. I think I'd rather chew off my own fingers than spend a week in a place like that. But then again, being in my 30's, I'm probably a bit old for their target market, so no doubt my opinion is irrelevant. It's a bit like an adult complaining that Sesame Street is so very childish!

But I have to say that the lasting impression was of that red-headed manager saying to camera that if the customers don't like it they can f*** off!

>Honestly, it looked absolutely horrific
Umm, we were in the first batch of customers, and it was a lot more civilised than some of the images might have suggested.

Strong points were the childrens clubs and day care facilities for the smaller children, which are unsurpassed, imho. Food was so-so, accommodation ok, sailing kit brand new, overall a good experience, and I would be happy to repeat it.

btw, both myself and swmbo are late-30's

I think the programme did no favours at all to Sunsail. I've had many Sunsail holidays and whilst not everything has always been perfect we have always had a great time. The impression given by the project management (which seemed dreadful) has not been reflected in our experience of resort management. The clubs are generally in lovely places, the kit is very good and most of the staff highly committed to sailing and their guests.

However, if all I knew of Sunsail was last night's programme I would not choose Sunsail for a holiday. In reality I will be going again this year although not to the new, big club shown.

You cynical person. I expect you have noticed something else. When the BBC report from the Soton Boatshow there is always a SunScum logo in a prime placement position just behind the reporters left ear.

Continuing off topic, whenever I see the username najs I think 'nadgers'! But then, I suppose I am a bit strange! /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Have they stopped letting absolute beginers use the trapeze on Hobies?
Have they attached the anti pitchpole devices to their fleet of Hobies?
Do they now equip the rescue boats with the appropriate equipment to perform rescues?

The tradegy of Laura Morgan in Greece several years ago is still rumbling thro the courts with Sunsail demonstrating some of the less attractive teflon traits of corporate Britain..

Sunsail...may look great on the surface but I am not sure I could support a company with such a cavalier attitude to safety. And before anyone kicks off, I know that that life is full of risks and I am not in favour of wrapping kids in cotton wool, they need to learn, it's just that this should be done in an enviroment where the support staff are adequately trained, equiped and focussed on the job, not looking at the tits of women on the beach.

(Martyncoates, if you are not on the payroll at Sunsail or otherwise connected with them then please ignore the following sentences and skip to the next post. If however, you are involved with Sunsail and your post was an attempt to use the forum to promote your latest Stalag, then please feel free to expand on the H&S policies, the lessons learned and enlighten us as to the actions taken to avoid a repetition of the Laura Morgan tragedy.

i saw the program. I have been to Sunsail club a couple of times in years past and it was fine: but I thought the fancy dress, communual 'forced' high-jinks on the program were NOT what I would want. Maybe they have changed their target customer?

When I was there, I thought it was a good balance. Some high jinks late in the evening, nothing forced, but mostly you could have a quiet drink if you wanted to (the upper bar, close to the holel), or a noisier drink (down at the beach bar, so further for noise to travel).

>Have they stopped letting absolute beginers use the trapeze on Hobies?
Nope. I put myself in the "beginner" category, but left at the end of the week being able to use the trapeze in moderate conditions after some practice and tuition. And the problem with that is ?? I would confess to a fair bit of windsurfing experience, but a windsurf board is not a Hobie.

>Have they attached the anti pitchpole devices to their fleet of Hobies?
No idea what that is, but they are fitted with floats at the top of the mast to prevent it going turtle 180'

>Do they now equip the rescue boats with the appropriate equipment to perform rescues?
I didn't inspect them closely. There were at least two ribs on patrol, which is two more ribs on patrol than if you tried sailing on your own. What equipment do you think should be carried? Are there standards, and if you were to inspect a safety boat from a UK club, would you find that equipment ?
