If the filming goes out as we were told, the 63rd 3 Rivers Race 2024 should be on the above programme.

This year, 119 boats entered the race, in which you have up to 24 hours to sail 50 miles, under 3 bridges twice, which means lowering your mast 4 times...
14 boats did not start due to high winds.
60 boats finished,
1 boat disqualified, outside assistance, and people on board without life jackets.
44 retired, including one mast snapped, and a dinghy with it's mast impaled in the mud.

A likely course record, to do the complete course, 7 hours 31 minutes, 27 seconds.

It was a remarkably good show, most of the people on there, both competitors and officials I know.
Sadly due to the high speed of this years race by the time the film crew had finished at the start most of the boats had already been to the Ludham bridge turning point. That is just up river of the 60ft wide section of river that Karen mentioned, where we try to use a 100 ft wide bend in the river. It gives some spectacular tacking round the buoy especially when it's crowded with boat.

I was stationed on Hickling broad 4.5 miles upriver of Heigham bridge the only videos of that area were from on board but they switched off before they got to the turning mark .
In the narrow section of river just below Hickling Broad we had chaos, it was the strongest wind section of the course. We had a sailing cruiser impaled into the reeds up to it's keel, a capsized wayfarer dinghy that impaled it's mast into the mud that required two rescue boats to haul it out.
A Norfolk punt snapped it's rudder off. Plus many other incidents. We sent our rescue boat down, the Martham guardship sent theirs up, and we are grateful to Hickling sailing club who launched 3 other rescue boats to assist

The full results are here, Home
Roger's just put up his full video
This is a video by a punt crews they were towed back by Karen's family motor boat.

More videos of the race will appear sometimes...

Great coverage. Well presented for both sailors and non sailors. We really enjoyed watching - and learned about an area we're pretty ignorant about.

Well if you got the right sort of boat, any dinghy, ( though trapezes and foils would be pointless), open keel boats i'd recommend a max draft of 4 ft, and any yacht draft less than 4 ft, but true seagoers would struggle. we have an open regatta week coming up 29th July to 2nd August. Horning Sailing Club

The regatta weekend at the start is club members only.

The gentlemen giving out prizes isn't drunk, he has a balance problem, but is still a very good sailor.

Depending on class, we have 4 races series a day ( dinghies), 3 races keelboats, and one or two yachts. Then each day, there are up to 4 special races per day depending on what you qualify for. I for instance take part in the service persons and ex service persons race.

Social events every night.

Come and try sailing in close quarters where 6 inches apart is a long way, you learn precision sailing very rapidly here...
