hi all at ybw.
ive just aquired a 94 bayliner capri, immaculate condition except it been out in the rain for a couple of years, someone has removed most of the floor right up to the sides giving me nothing to support the new floor, also can I use quality exterior ply and glass over it after sealing the ply with resin. Do i then just stick the carpet to this. I am a joiner so dont mind the plywood floor fitting etc but I not a boatbuilder, help please

Yes 3 good coats of resin each side of the marine grade plywood will do the trick. Glass the edges to the hull.

The floor is actually laid on glassed in stringers and formers, so you should be able to see where they were originally fitted and ground out.

Buy a cover for your boat, nothing rots wood as well as freshwater. If it was saltwater you may have got away with it.

Have a gander at this:

And welcome. Nice to have another binliner owner on here. Thought I was the only one. /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

Sorry I tried the link and it didn't work. Search >Bayliner owners club<. They are mostly Americans but we can't hold that against them can we?
Some good guys on there and tons of advice about Bayliners.
You may even bump into me!

thanx for the reply tinkicker,
only really been poking around so far, bit scared to pull up all the carpet, so done it today, wot a mess the rest of the floor right up to the front is as well, after more poking about I found the side wall and side storage totally rotten under the glassfibre. so I took a grinder to it and carefully cut righ round the side wall of the boat. this must be the most rotten bayliner for its age, I must take photosfor all to see. the wood has dissapeard totally only leaving brown mush EVERYWHERE, wot have I let myself into. But after a couple of hours Ive cleared out one side of the boat, glass and all, and it actually looks inspiring now. I will do one half at a time so I can take measurements from the opposite side still in situ.
lFor instance the box frame that hold the seat rails just crumbled as soon as I took of the glass so the was nothing to measure - glad I did this ! Do you reckon 12mm ply as was I think on it or put on heavy 18mm but this is hard and heavier to work with or is the weight more an issue. I have been reading the bayliner club forum but most people just say take a grinder to it- not much more detail except for their specific project. have U done this - OR anyone else out there.
Im from strathclyde if anyone has any free weekends to help ha ha will keep my progress posted hopefully with some photos.

No I have not had the pleasure thank god.
Mechanical engineering is my forte, give me a wood saw and it gets dangerous for both the job and innnocent bystanders.
DIY expert I am not. If it was a steel hull, no problem.

Just trotting out the info I have read on other people's projects re coating the wood with resin etc.

Try this link, the photos may be clear enough to give you a clue to how they did it. I'm sure a PM to the author will get you some free advice.

Weight is a consideration as it will affect your handling, top speed and fuel consumption, if the boat is full to capacity, the extra weight may even be the difference between getting on plane or not.

Now where did I put my woodchisel? /forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif

Hi Neil

220 MPI nice. No horrible auto choke and no soot in the water at the back of the boat.

I'm told 220 - 240hp is around the limit for Alpha, so have you opted for the Bravo drive? If so I would specify the Mercathode unit or similar if you berth in saltwater.

I'm suffering from engine envy. /forums/images/graemlins/tongue.gif

a1g2 leg which is already on the boat. This was replaced three years ago so is in fantastic condition anyway. The 220 is the largest size for that leg and I don't plan on re-propping from the 190 as I'll be mostly towing so it's not going to be stressed /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif
