Hi. Installed a new Baystar Hydraulic steering and i am a bit confused on fluid issues. After installation i ran boat and after a couple of fluid checks i noticed that when i open plug some fluid ( very few) seemed to seep out of filling hole. However lately after a couple of runs it seemed that fluid level have stabilized only to notice that yesterday just before going out for a run i opened cap ( filling plug) and saw fluid level correctly but after a run and rechecked, level seemed to went down. After boat is sat for a while level of fluid before a run seem to return to normal. Can some one help please because its confusing me a bit? Also when turning wheel to starboard a small clicking sound is heard in helm. Normal or not?

Depending which way you steer.....the driving ram at the back pushes in or out to push the engine/drive left or right. No idea which way around yours is obviously

Thanksagain Farsco. so when steering to either side level should drop?

The rams pipe inlet/outlet are at opposite ends so the fluid gets pushed in one end and it leaves the other so should make only a tiny difference to level.
The reservoir only holds a small amount of fluid. It does raise and lower a small amount but probably not as much as a table spoons worth.
If it squirt out under a little pressure it's often air

Thanks rappey. Yes while turning steering it fluctuates. Obviously fluid should be visible so do you recommend i refill a bit? Before leaving yesterday(after a run) level was visible only on the lower end and while turning.

In a perfect world the pipes go uphill to helm so turning left/ right purges air.
The helm unit has a pressure release valve. You need a lot of air in the system with filler cap closed and air inside very compressed for this to actuate so air is a total pain but unlikely to damage anything.
Just fill it right up, lock to lock, level still good? Put cap back on and go make some waves ?
From experience even when the helm unit looks empty it still works but probably not a good idea.
Once you've used it a lot you will feel the steering being less responsive long before it stops working when fluid level is far to low

Thanks a lot Rappey for your kind help. Honestly Your way of explaining things is really good and easy to understand for people like me that are not technical inclined. Appreciate lots. Bless mate and thanks again.
