Hi guys, back again.

Still boatless (boat sold in May) in search for our next one so filling the holidays with looking at boats across the country.

So far we're hooked on the likes of a Targa 37-39 or Princess V40, also looked at Sealine S41 ... but given budget restrictions the ones we're looking at tend to be from 1998-2000.

Visited a 1997 Fairline Targa 37 today, boy what a wreck at almost 125k ... definitely a no-go. Got me thinking if it's worth spending that much money at such an old cruiser.

Then, spotted a brand new Bavaria 35 cruiser slightly higher priced. Owner wants to upgrade to Bavaria 42 after one month. I must admit Bavaria was not high on my list but after visiting the boat, here's some considerations:

- loads of room inside and outside
- very practical cockpit, large cockpit table
- wide side decks (good handrails)
- sturdy stainless steel window frame

Agree, it may not be the most fanciest cruiser with luxury and plush accomodation but thought price-quality it made a very very good impression.

Only potential drawback : it is powered with D4-225 and engine room is not insulated. Has anyone any experience with these plants in a 8000 kg cruiser and do they provide enough power when needed. I notice there are a few other ones around with D4-260 and even one with D6-310. I personally think the 260's would be the best choice but the owner was advised by the dealer that the 225's would have higher resale value due to fuel economics ? I think the 310's may be a bit heavy for this one ? Re. insulation, I was told that adding this would reduce noise levels considerably.

Any comments on this cruiser ??

Thanks,
Alain

One additional question: Since Bavaria keeps popping out new models at the speed of light, how would this affec resale value ? Bav 35 after two years already replaced by new Bav 37 ...

i do agree about this
I also cannot understand there models anymore
I think they had a 37 about 2 years ago in production

they should at least give some names to there boats which clears the situation

for e.g. Sunseeker are very good about this

Hazar!

Did somemone ask a Bav question? /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

You are right to say the 35 has good accomodation, volumous doesn't quite cover it, it is huge!. Since he has only had the boat for a month or so I assume it is an 06 or 07 model boat. This should come with the lighter wood interior, which has been quite well received. Usual configuration is good for cruising, with a big aft cabin and nice sized for cabin. Saloon doesn't convert to a berth however (not that you would really want 6 sleeping on a boat this size anyway).

Cockpit is good, but not as flexible as some. Fixed curved crew seat to port is smaller in practise than it looks, being comfy for only really to people. Dash is well laid out, and there is room for a plotter and other bits and bobs you might want to add.

Dining area/sunpad at the stern is good for 6/8, but the table is a horrid plastic. UK importer offered a nicer teak table as an option - if the boat doesn't have that then it is well worth getting one made as it improves things 100%. Access to the side decks is good, but access to the swim platform from an along side pontoon is quite difficult as the 35 has large corners which go straiht up to deck level. Nothing you can do about this, but worth noting.

Handling on the 35 is typical Bavaria - easy to plane and requires little trimming once up. You will find that adjusting the leg trim does begger all, and I ran my 330 at -3 the wholw time. Don't know why this is, I think it is just the design of the hull. Good sea boat that punches above its weight. The later boats are prone to rattle in a heavy ish sea though - nothin terminal just annoying.

I don't know the weights, but if the 35 really is 8000kg then the D4 225's should be ok, but it depends on how fast you want to go. I rreckon WOT with a clean bum will be around 30knts, so you are going to cruise at 25 or a bit less with fouling. I had the KAD43's (230Hp) on my Bav 330 which tipped the scales at just under 6000kg, and that boat was good for around 37/38knts. D4 260 would probably be a better bet, and I don't buy the fuel consuption arguement. Bigger engines do not neccessarily use more fuel for the same performance. If the weight is right, you should see about 34knts with the 260's

Bavaria have always cust corners with sound insulation. Mine had it as an option from the factory and it was actually pretty quiet. Retro-fitting insulation is an easy job to DIY in a weekend and will make a difference.

On the whole a good boat, but Bavarias fit and finish has sadly dropped of a little in recent years. Nothing major, and nothing structural. Just make sure you are happy with the internal joinery of the actual boat. Some are better than others.

Bavaria are so weird about sound-proofing. My brother has 47 sailing Bavaria and no sound proofing either. He spent a weekend with metal-backed foam, glue and bolts and has transformed the noise levels.

Otherwise all Bavarias seem very well built if slightly spartan.

Owner seems to be talking crap regarding fuel consumption. At the same speed (knots, not rpm), the 225s and the 260s should be drinking similar amounts. The bigger engines give you more options.
