Bavaria 47 Ocean?

Hi all,

We are looking at changing the current boat for a centre cockpit and between 45 to 50 foot in length and being mere mortals, there are of course financial constraints!

So, we have been looking at Northwind 47, seen a very nice 1991 example that I am hoping to see mid Jan, but also seen a nice Bavaria Ocean 47 for sale that is 9 years younger and has stuff like a generator etc already installed.

So, what are people's thoughts on the Bavaria Ocean 47 as I understand they were made differently to the other Bavarias?

What would be better for a circumnavigation, Northwind 47 (1991) or Bavaria Ocean 47 (2000) (aware that the Bavaria has a spade rudder and the Northwind has a semi skeg hung rudder). Tankage is about the same, but either one I would add extra diesel tankage anyway.

The Bavaria 47 Ocean is a very nice boat. It's one of the few boats that I would happily sell mine to buy. An ideal blue water cruiser and liveaboard.

There aren't many about and they are very sought-after, so don't hang about if you want it.

Agree with Bob. The Ocean models were specifically designed for ocean cruising although they used both the same visual design cues as the Cruiser range and much of the interior is similar. However, they have greater displacement, higher ballast ratios and greater sail area. In the market they were positioned against Moodys and HRs without the premium price. Production volumes were low for the 47 although the 38 and particularly the 40 were made in significant numbers.

I believe that both are very capable boats. I’d look at them in the flesh, consider price, inventory and condition and buy the most attractive package.

Thanks and thinking am erring toward the Northwind at the moment due to the semi skeg hung rudder and heavier construction ...but we will see.

Both look like nice boats, and quite good value too.

I think if your thinking of taking in more Northern latitudes I'd go for the Northwind for the Decksaloon. But both look really comfortable to call home for a handful of years!

I've found that bigger bavarias not the ocean one, quite good at doing ocean crossings without fuss. Seem to be popular for this. The sort of 45 to 50 foot group.
