I like the 8 berth internal layout of this boat and am thinking about buying one as a coastal cruiser. I would be grateful to hear from any owners or anyone who has chartered on their experiences or views. No old chestnuts about Bavaria please; the analogy with Skoda or Ford Focus v other boat "Mercedes" has been well documented. Volkswagon own Skoda and as I understand it, most people who can't afford Mercedes get by happily with their reliable Ford. I would also like to hear if any owners have adapted the boat into e.g. a cutter for more deep water cruising. Any takers?

ooh no chestnutiness here, sir, not an owner but i have chartered bavs.

A (serious) point wd only be about resale. I am sure you will be aware tho that as sales volumes are large, resale is a tight issue, and plentyof the very same boat always for sale. This means big-money options like a radar etc are heftily discounted, more than normal, cos otherwise the boat looks very pricey, and buyers start thinking about what they can get away without. Ofcourse, if you get full value of options (say keep boat 6 years till radar laughably old) then this issue irrelevant. S/hand tho, the dirt-cheapest bare bones boat will be looked at first. So i wd def try and get options later as needed.

Or of course...look for almost unused secondhander?

Sailiing wise, they sail fine enough for non-expert me. Might not be fastest i dunno but all boats handle rubbish at 7knots compared to cars at 95mph on grippy road. Oh heck, i mentioned cars.

Anyway our bav was was fine and fun and you would have to jump onloads of boats in quick succession and back to develop a hm, this is bit less good.

Bigness is the main thing on a boat for comfiness, so a 46 footer almost invariably nicer than 40 footer regardless of mercedesness or otherwise imho.

Not-bustedness is another important boat feature imho, and this seems common enough to most newish volume continental-built boats.
