Furher to my earlier post " Next Boat ; What To Buy "

I am looking at a 2006 Bavaria 29 with twin D3s 160s ,and 180 hours on the clock. Am told that the turbos were replaced a year or so ago because the owner found them noisy. I know that there has been much said about this engine , but little I think about the turbos.

I would appreciate it if anyone could give me any pointers as to other reasons why the turbos on a relatively new boat should have been replaced so soon , and whether I should be concerned that they might need replacing again soon.

I have seen Bav 29s with a KAD 300 ( 285 HP ) and two KAD 32s ( jointly 340 hp ). Any thoughts whether the boat might be underpowered with two D3s ( jointly 320 hp) taking into account the extra weight. I am not looking for top speed, just want to cruise comfortably at 25 knots.

Thanks in advance for all replies.

Yes it will be underpowered, D3-190's were brought out to overcome this problem, apparently 160's aren't 160hp.

If it was me I wouldn't touch anything with a D3 in it, sweeping gereralisation I know but do you need the hassle, both the KAD engined boats would get my money.

Turbos changed becuase they were noisy! theres more to that than you have been told, so run away.

i would say underpowered!

We had an SC29 with D3 160's and it was underpowered. it had problem with sticking turbo valve or something (sorry, im not technically minded)

there were many problems with the early engines but believe the fixes VP put in place largely solved them.

there have been quite a few threads on here about D3 problems tho!
