Battery wire strippers ?

Hi,

I have some battery and other 12V wire connections to make and I don't have any strippers meaty enough for 50mm² (approx 13mm o/d) wire. I'm looking for a stripper that will alow me to preset the cut so as to guarantee not to nick the strands. I don't want to spend the earth but need it to work more than I need it to be cheap...

I really don't want to soldier on with scalpel blades and other such make-do recipes, nor would a bigger version of the wire stripper pliers shown here be any good : http://www.tradecounterdirect.com/p..._-6-5in.html?gclid=CIKSh8vCu7cCFWXKtAodVmIAKQ , I want the proper kit.

Any ideas gratefully received but please remember the wire size before posting : 0AWG (== 50mm² ~= 13mm o/d).

Never seen strippers that big. I did all mine by just running a knife round the insulation. You soon get the knack of not cutting into the cores.

a stanley knife will be much cheaper,

I use the second one in Vic's link and it is excellent , but I use it a lot so a bit of a difference, as you are only doing a few then it would be a monumental waste of money, care and a Stanley knife will serve at a push though there is a cheap and more accurate tool; As your cable is about 1/2" then a 15mm plastic pipe cutter will make a neat job with a good square end, you need the type with an internal sharp blade, they compress to the size you need and are under a tenner at Screwfix.

When I wanted some battery cables an auto-electrician made them up for me. They were the exact size I wanted and cheaper than off the shelf ones from Halfords.

It's definitely easier, though, to build a system in situ rather than having to pre-plan every last detail and draw up a cutting list for someone else to make the cables off site. You can secure the cable along its route, lead it up to the terminal, and cut and terminate it at just the right length. When I rewired Kindred Spirit I bought several metres each of black and red tinned battery cable (both 16mm² and 25mm², for different purposes), crimp terminals, and heat-shrink. I have a hydraulic crimper which makes up these cables just as well as anyone else could.
