Hi Guys,

I'm looking to purchase two new batteries for the Relcraft, I believe one should be for the engine and one for the accessories?
Engine is an AD41 VP, and by accessories I mean vhf, gps, fishfinder, cabin lights, nav lights,cd,tv etc...
Could do with a little advice on what to go for as I'm unsure about cranking amps etc...
Also has a windlass fitted but not sure (yet) which battery this feeds off!
Thanks, Rob.

First thing to do is measure up the space where the batteries will fit, and note which way around the terminals need to be, if there are cable restrictions.
Then it's a matter of finding the best reasonably-priced battery that fits.
CCA will be 1000 or more anyway, and something like a Numax Marine battery will work adequately as both a starter battery and an aux battery.

Something like this, if you have the space?

Someone will be along in a minute to tell you that you need a deep cycle battery for the aux battery, but these are big bucks. Will it last twice as long as the cheaper option?

For an AD41The VP book says:

450 cold cranking amps
and between 88 and 140 Ah (amp Hours) capacity ...............dont know why there would be a max recommended though.

On my boat (same engines) one has been happy for the last two years on an 80Ah battery which serves the engine only, whilst the other has had two 180Ah and an 80Ah linked to it, serves the domestic system as well as the engine.

Whe we had a single engine boat (25ft sports cruiser) we had two 110 Ah batteries connected via a 'off', '1', '2', or 'both' switch. Used 'both' all the time we were running switching to which ever battery we nominated as the domestic battery when no engine or no shorepower. That way always knew we had power to get going, assuming we remembered to throw the switch when we stopped!!!
You dont mention fridge......thats the big battery drainer.

Pull the fridge temp down with the shore power, and it will keep cool for that amount of time, without the need of power. They do drag batteries down pretty quick. Just looked at the battery and prices you are prepared to pay for them!! ok now just got up off the floor. We use lorry batteries I know they are not supposed to be on a boat but at 1/2 of the price and a life of about 5 years who's complaining?

we got 644's http://www.eurocarparts.com/644-car-batteries

they do leisure ones as well.

Fridge will be 240v only, maximum I'm ever away from shorepower whilst out on a day's fishing is about 10hrs, and only planning to use it to cool some drinks ;)

That's exactly what I did with my Bayliner. Bought a small domestic fridge, but still larger than the small boat fridges, and powered it from shorepower. Cost £60 from memory) I originally though about installing an invertor to keep it running when underway but in reality I didn't need to as it kept cold for ages. I did always have it up really high when on shorepower.

If you decide to change 'type' (lead acid, AGM, etc) check your battery charger can handle that 'type' of battery. Some 'types' demand different charging specs.

Can you explain why a lorry battery is not allowed to be on a boat? Does it smell or call you names?

You could, but size/weight is less of an issue on a truck weighing 40 tonnes.
And £80 including delivery isn't a bad price for a 110Ah battery, even for a lorry.
