Battery for starting engine

Hello,

I'd like some opinions on the requirements for the above - I believe the term is cold cranking amps. The engine manufacturer does not specify cca but gives a starter motor rating of 3.4 hp / 2.3 kw: nominally around 200 amps at 12 volts?

The CCA requirement for 1, 2 and 3 cylinder Yanmars is 200 A.

That's quite a big starter if it's being rated the normal way i.e. continuous output. You would multiply that up quite a bit for CCA requirement. e.g. the little Yanmar starter Vyv refers to is rated at about .8 or 1kW (by memory) but they suggest a 200CCA battery so pro-rata you'd be looking at 5-600CCA.
What engine is it?

The engine is a V''o Tmd 41b - 150 hp. Apart from starter capacity the manual gives a max battery size of 140 amps - don't think 30 amp model would up to it! Thinking 700 cca to be safe.

As you say the Owners manual specifies a battery with a maximum capacity of 140Ah

( No one has explained yet why Volvo specify maximum capacities !)

Typically a commercial starter battery with that capacity will have a CCA in the approx range of 800 to 900 amps

I would go with that. 140Ah or 800 CCA.

Yup that's all consistent - middle size truck battery.

mines a tractor battery, heavy duty, 96amp 850 crank, and it has no problem starting my Perkins 4-108, on 1st attempt. Local auto shop £65.
