I went out today and ordered a new 25hp four stoke tohatsu for my shetland 498.
they will supply and fit it all eg, cables and remotes etc but they said i need to get a battery and box and mount it for the electric start.

do i need any special battery or would a small lead acid battery from Halfords be ok and get a box to fit it in.

A small car starter battery should do just fine.

Any recommendations on size? Amp-hour capacity or cold cranking amps (CCA)

Probably be wise to look at what battery boxes are available first then get battery to fit box.

When you connect the engine to the battery be absolutely sure you do not get positive and negative muddled.

luckily i managed to get them to fit the engine, cables and remotes and set it all up in the price of the engine but the only battery they had was over 150pounds and was gel internals.

ive already gone well over my original budget so will get a battery box and get a battery to fit the box.

i didnt ask about cold cranking or amp hrs but if i get a battery suitable for a 1.0-1.4 ltr petrol engine it should be plenty to start a 400cc four stroke outboard. i fancy a fish finder later next season so will find out how much power they use and ask santa to get me one.
