Ok, so I am a real novice!! Just bought 1st rib and having great fun but can anyone explain to me, does the battery charge from the outboard like a car or do I need to charge it up periodically. Many thanks.
Surely if you push the boat hard enough, the water flowing past the prop will turn the engine, and if there is enough juice in the battery to provide a bit of a spark, it will start ?

I think not unless you have burst out of your shirt and have turned green.

Yes quite possible, we have started 150 V6 mariner by pull starting in the past. Wasn't as difficult as we thought because the engine is reasonably balanced. Also managed to tow start a Evinrude V4 115 hp, didn't mean to, but towing a dive boat home after the engine refused to start the driver heard a turbine noise from the prop as we reached 12 knots so stuck it in gear. Failed the first time but having built up the speed again she fired the second time. Frantic efforts followed undoing the tow line, transferring bodies and a dash to get home before she cut out again.

Yes on the older carb outboards, especially if they have been run recently so are still warm, but the new injection engines like the Optimax need the compressor and FI pump running. Optimaxes don't even have a grove in the flywheel for a rope cord.
