My battery charger on the SC35 has gone bang.
A small amount of smoke, breaker tripped, etc.
It was a "Promariner ProNautic 1240 c3".

Currently thinking along the lines of a Sterling ProCharge Ultra as a replacement.
Any better options out there?

I have the a 30 amp pro charge, bought a few years ago, and it has been faultless. It has two outputs allowing the engine battery to be separately charged. I think the 10amp model has only one, with two outlets from 20 amp upwards, so you might want to check this before buying.

Promarine Pronautic and Pro Charge Ultra are from the same stable just the wording on the front and the red banner are different.

Due to the expense of a new one why do you not have your's repaired?

The 10a has 2 outputs, all others have 3.

There are five 105Ah batteries, and the original charger was 40A, so I’d like to go with a 40A charger again.
Centaur looks a bit pricey.

Strangely, although I have disconnected the 240v input and all the 12v positive connections at the battery ends, the little fan inside the dead charger is still unhappily whirring away.

You're right to stick with 40a. Up to 30a the Victron chargers are better value than the Sterling ones, but at 40 the Victron ones go up in price quite a bit, still really good quality though. If i needed 40a, i'm not sure which i'd go for, to be honest.

I think I'd try to go for the Victron, which is a lot heavier than the Sterling, hopefully representing a more robust construction. The Victron Centaur 40A charger can be found for £373 (https://boatelectricals.co.uk/centaur-battery-charger-12v-40a/) so it's still rather more than the Sterling 40A, which is typically around £300.

After giving it some thought...... I'd be tempted to go for the Victron. The Centaur is a much bigger charger than the Sterling, for one thing. I think Victron chargers are better built than Sterling, i've never had a Victron fail on any installation i've done.

That said, if i had to replace my current charger because it wasn't powerful enough, i'd probably go with the Sterling, as it would fit straight in and i wouldn't have to change any wiring.

What are you going to do with the old one?

If you don't want to repair it, I would be interested in having a poke around in it before it goes in the bin ...

Happy Days :)
Still need to tidy up a bit, fill in screw holes from old charger, but that can wait until next weekend.

Thanks to all for the advice, but I went for the Sterling in the end because it seemed a bit more "digital", cheaper, modern, supports more types of batteries out of the box, and claims to have a more sophisticated charging profile.

The Victron I'm sure has great quality components, but felt like a more dated industrial-grade product with a simple timer between modes, and being heavier, would have been more difficult to install in the confined space.
