At present have one 100amp "leisure" battery performing both domestic and engine starting duties. I would like to fit a second battery and would appreciate the guidence of the forum. The engine is a Yanmar 1GM10 and I have a new good quality engine start battery available FOC.
Questions are-
Best way to wire system?
Is it worth fittng advanced regulator?
Split charge diodes?
What sort of battery swithes?
Any other useful info

Before the deluge of 20,000 ways to wire a battery! Try ADVERC on www.adverc.co.uk They do offer loads of info on battery systems, really is worth a read. They will also be helpfull with advice if you contact them. It will of course involve their products but you can at least sort through and take your pick.

And If I remember, they also have on Adverc's website a typical wiring diagram with various combinations of batteries etc.

i have the same setup, except i have 2 x 100 amp batts ,i have fitted an adverc advanced regulator system and its brilliant !, the only thing is that if you do run the batts low it really does knock 1 1/2 knots of the boats speed and the alternator gets hot !.
it basically bypasses the internal alternator regulator and controls the output via the external box.
so in short it allows the maximum alternator oput straight away if needed.
takes 1 1/2 hours to fit inc the wire that has to be fitted to the alternator.

I have the alternator charging both batteries but have a diode before the engine starting battery.
the positive cable to the starter motor is from the engine battery.
the diode prevents the engine battery supplying power to the domestic circuit so only ever has starting duty.
I have isolation switches on both positive supplies.
its very simple. you never have to worry about which battery is in service or which is charging - just turn them both on and let the diode keep them seperate.
