Battery Boxes

I'll confess. The BSS made me build a nice battery box from varnished ply. The BSS made me think about proper ventilation for that box, secure battery terminals and cables of the correct rating. Without the BSS I'd have lashed something together 'for now'...

I made a set of boxes for my 4 in marine ply painted in battleship grey with stainless vents, all nicely labelled.
I took the guideline as a minimum as I didn't fancy a return visit for a re test. The BSS man was most impressed:D
 
"Now with regard to battery boxes, the BSS is confined to the upper Thames, which does not involve any bumps or jolts, assuming your Skipper isn't Atilla the Hun, therefore your would have to be really really stupid to place a battery in such stupid places you need a box."

Is this correct? I thought now the BSS applied to the Broads. In July we took my Cornish Crabber up the coast from Walton to Lowestoft, and entered the Broads. A few days later went across Breydon Water in 40 +mph side winds, the rolling was as bad as anything I've had at sea. Good thing our batteries were very secure!

If they haven't blown up or sunk while bouncing around the sea, with, like wind and waves and tipping over, then it seems fairly unlikely that the smooth waters of the Crinan Canal will trigger a catastrophe.

I met two of them in the Crinan Canal this summer. One was an Amel which had come from Canada, via the Caribbean, and the other was a rather nice RM which had come from France. Neither exploded while in the canal.
