Got a recommendation for marine batts from this forum.....can't remember from who, but can endorse the recommendation. Very good price, excellent advise and next day free delivery. Just hope they last (although they have a 2 yr guarantee.) Bat Man UK

I need some advice on batteries... I have 3 batteries, one is the starboard engine start and the other two are the port engine and the domestics together. All Batteries are standard marine 100ah batteries.

The starboard engine start batt has died and I was thinking of taking one of the two batteries off the Port/domestic to replace the starboard battery and buying a proper deep cycle battery and adding it to the standard 100ah cranking battery on the port/domestic side. Will this give me better domestic battery life or will having two different batteries on the same circuit mess things up?

Hope it makes sense..

Kevin.

if you are using a battery bank for both start and domestic, you are likely to have short life on the batteries, furthermore, the types should not be mixed, but there is a solution.

Elecsol batteries are hybrids that can be used for both tasks. They have carbon fibre reinforcement to the plates to cater for the shock load of engine start and are good for deep cycle as well (better than normal wet acid as they will accept a charge faster.)

Trojan are similar

they are a reasonable price, and also come with a 5 year guarantee!

Can also reccomend Elecsol, 3 x 220 ah bought 3 years ago for engine start and domestic, and never a hiccup, no maintenance, and good prices direct from the manufacturer.

Why not have one engine start battery for both engines and two domestics with a jump start solenoid from the domestics for emergecy use. No sense in having two under-used batteries for the engines and one over-used one for domestics.

I have one battery for stbd engine start, and two for port engine start and domestic, with a link switch. I think that pretty much achieves the same

I think PCUK has got it right. You would then be using a starter-type battery to start both engines - and not asking the domestic deep cycle bank to do something which its not designed for. Problem: you would have to re-arrange the wiring.
