Batteries in fuel tank spaces

Most outboard powered sports boats seem to have the battery in the same compartment as the (removable) fuel tanks. I am currently refitting my boat but I'm just not comfortable with them sharing the same space for risk of vapours igniting. I guess that 1) there should be no escaping vapours and 2) there should be no spark at the batteries because all the connections are permanent.
I am building in vents to the space but how do other members feel about the situation? Anyone had a problem with vapours igniting and are still here to tell the tale?

Thanks

Colin

He suggested i put my batteries next to my fuel tank so he could use the locker furthest away from the fuel as a piss station . I of course told him this would be a silly idea as pissing in a fibreglass boat especially in a locker designed to house a battery would be stupid . Better to put the gas next to the fuel and use the gas locker to piss in as it has a lower draining vent therefore alowing the piss out into the water !

The gas locker to piss in is obviously the correct answer as it has a low drain, but don't you have any wash basins at waist height as this would be even better.
