I want to fit some new batteries. In the past I've gone for DC27s from Battery Megastore, that's the size I need. £200 for three seems OK but price is not that important. They are domestic only, no engine starting. Have things moved on? Are there any better batteries or suppliers? I'd love to go for Trojans but they won't fit.

Depends on your useage and expectations.
I would rate these among the better of the mid price leisure batteries (without a huge database of experience or testing I confess) but don't kid yourself it's a real deep cycle battery. Its manufacturers - AtlasBX of Korea - make less ambitious claims for it than Battery Mega do.
Is that good enough for your needs?
If your useage pattern really needs Trojans, the answer is no.
How long have they lasted you?

These were on the boat when it was bought. I haven't checked the date stamp but the skipper wants new. New it is!
We spent half of last year aboard and these three did OK. I'm going to fit a Rutland 913 soon and we have 150w of solar panels.

I've just noticed that battery megastore charge more for two DC27s if you buy them as a pair! I will have to speak to them to try for deal.

Many thanks, that makes interesting reading. The Numax XDT30MF look very good to me. They seem to have very high cycle numbers and I prefer having batteries I can top up. It allows for using a hydrometer too. Just trying to find a price and supplier.

I see that it is stated to be tubular plate type. That is what is used in the best large traction batteries, I have not seen that construction used in this market sector before. It tends to take up more space than ordinary flat plate construction.

(In case of confusion, tubular plate construction has nothing to do with spiral wound cylindrical cells e.g. Optima and Cyclon.)
