I got my new sparkling white mainsail today. The batten pockets have velcro flaps with an additional tape which I have poked down the pocket (also velcroed) with the wee batten supplied. But what do I do with the tape end - leave it sticking out? - push it in and risk losing it? - cut it off?

With the wind gusting over 25kts I didn't even get to hoist it and try it.

the wee batten supplied is to help you get the battens out of the pockets. the tape end? are you not sure they are streemers (tell tales) at the pocket ends.

Ours truely pissed

I just tuck mine in....easy enough to hook them out again, if you leave them fluttering they will soon fray, leaving you with nothing to pull the velcro strips out again !

Mine are made from the same material as the tell tales and they are well worn out..

On my North sail, the loop (tab) sticking out is to allow you to pull the velcro'd stripp out again, otherwise there's no way you could do it short of using a pair of scissors or a knife!!

FWIW, we leave the cord (light line on ours) projecting. No probs over several years with doing this, though you could tuck it into the pocket I 'spose.

Agree with Jerryat. On our main the bits of line are nylon cord. Never bothered tucking them in and they're not showing any signs of fraying (after approx 5 yrs).
