Hi sorrt to ask such a basic question but....

I have just purchased Barton winches size size 16. I thought the instructions provided would be useful in installing them /forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif but they are very limited. Can anyone please give me the ABC of getting at the bolt holes to attach the winch to the boat? It seems to my inexperienced eye that the winch needs to be taken apart in order to fit - Is this so?

thanks

I'm not familiar with the Barton winch but all others I've installed, yes, you have to dismantle them to get at the base plate. There is usually a circular spring clip or a screw on plate on the top of the winch. Undo and CAREFULLY lift off the drum - sometimes springs and pawls fly out so I always do it in a basin or bucket to catch anything. Then fit the base in position. I've always drilled one hole, bolted up and then drilled the others. Put LARGE stainless washers under the nuts or a strong backing plate and mastic between the base and the deck.

My Barton winches are simply held together by a single screw in the top. Remove that and lift the entire gubbins off the base, thereby keeping all the springs and pawls trapped inside (but do it so that you'll catch anything that does escape)

Fit base and then carefully refit all the gubbins as one lump being careful not to let any bits escape.

Must add that mine are 30 year old bottom handle winches and much smaller!
