Does anyone have an opinion on the Barton boom strut, firstly as a bit of kit and secondly in comparison to other boom kickers/vangs. I'm not looking at the gas ones as they are far too expensive but as I sail a lot single handed I am looking for an easier option to my topping lift.

Many thanks.

Peter.

Can only comment as a bit of kit, fitted one last season, as you, I sail single handed and did not have luxury of topping lift. Best piece of kit brought for ages, dont know how I managed before hand. Did think it was a little expensive for two lengths of fibreglass rods and ali fittings but the device seems well put together and was easy to fit. Seems well capable of holding up boom without any other support. Basically does everything its says it can, cant say fairer that that .

Hi Ashanta:

I bought one s/h on ebay last winter and fitted it on my Leisure 29, absolutely no problems.

I had to make a s/s slider for the mast though to get the fit I wanted.

I have the main in Lazy Jacks which also adds to the weight, I still have the toping lift and use it as a weight taker when I leave the boat for a while I also make sure the kicker is well slack (bit of an old tart really).

Have fun

Agree with every one else, my friend fitted one on his Contessa 28 - very pleased with it but experiment with the best position before you cut the rods to length. Make sure the boom lifts when you release the kicker.
