well done chaps, the motor is now free and everything is moving very well.
i could not get a very good leverage on it without lifting the whole thing off the bench but once the hammer came out it had no chance!!!
i just need to sort out the pull cord thing now that fell on to the bench in a kind of haphazard kind of way, i expect to have some left overs!
thankyou all for your input.
hope the pics work!

Jolly good stuff.

The recoil starting things always fall to bits. A bit of patience with the spring, and you'll get it back together quite easily.

My old 9.8hp one was always a good'un. Never any trouble and purred away nicely for such an old lump. Must have been at least 30 years old. That one was lectric start, so didnt need to worry too much about the pull start.

"once the hammer came out it had no chance!!!"............sounds ominous. Sling a bit more diesel in and turn the engine over on the flywheel just to make sure the piston rings aren't sticking. Then I'd sling in a good dollop of 2 stroke oil to and work that round to make sure everything has a bit of lube.

Once thats done you could probably have ago at starting it, just make sure Greenpeace is nowhere within 500 miles of you cos that little beastie will throw out one hell of a smoke cloud......bang goes the uk's quoter of green house gases!

Agree with Barry there, oil it up well before trying to start, and let it tick over for a couple hours, preferbly in gear, before you start using any revs. Use 25:1 in your first tankful to help loosen it all up.

flywheel moves freely by hand and it all seems quite smooth, gears all fine, prop turns.
it did`nt need a big bash with the hammer, just gentle persuading!
i`ll lube it up well but i cant start it till i get the fuel line and tank off the boat, probably bring the boat home at the weekend anyway.
anybody want to buy a well looked after 7.5 outboard? lol it must of had one careful owner at some time!!!!

hmm.....I'm in the market for a small'ish outboard for a little boat that I keep at Redcliff that gets used in the harbour for fishing. Give ya 50 quid for it!!

i`ll be keeping it for now,we need to think what we are doing about boats in the spring.
looks like the shetland will be sold, maybe with this motor as an aux in the whole package, as it is an odd size really,to big to chuck on the back of the avon or the wayfarer and probably to small to power a dory sensibly.this will probably be the next type of boat, something i can keep at home and launch easily as i find the mooring fees a lot to pay.(mitchells yard)
