I'm currently having a bit of a nightmare which I'm sure we've all had...

I'm struggling with barnacles on my boat moored in Cowes (soon to be moored at Yarmouth, IOW).

Can anyone recommend a suitable/favourite antifoul/antibarnacle product? Someone mentioned Propshield to me, but I'm not convinced. Likewise someone has said Dr Barnacle grease is good, but again I'd like someone to advise me. Any advice please?

Thanks...

Assume you mean barnacles on your prop. This can be very location specific - and even vary over time in the same location.

There are various ways of trying to deal with it - polishing the prop, coating with lanolin, using Propshield, antifouling with something like Trilux etc. None are universally successful and some people report success with most of them. The basic problem is that it is very difficult to get anything to stick to the surface of a prop then spends some of its time whizzing around.

So, all you can do is try the potions, but recognise that even if it works one year in one place it may not do the next.

Hi, thanks for the reply and your advice...

Yeah I mean on the proper, basically I'm down from 7.5 knots to 4.5 knots and now I'm going to have to lift the boat, clean and hope for the best.

I'm thinking of giving this Dr Barnacle a go, found a DVD on it on the website, looks quite promising. What do you think?

Been using Dr Barnacle successfully for 3 years now on our yacht in the Menai Straits and there is still 2-3 years worth left in the jar. We also put a very light coating on our log paddle wheel with equal success. I understand that the product was originally developed for the companies MD/owner for use on his boat.

Used it last year for the first time, far less fouling and it was clear from circular marks that some barnacles had settled, most likely when moored for a while but had fallen off leaving no glue.

Barnacles on the propeller

This was our prop. after lift out last November, and only 5 months afloat. I had treated it with Propshield, but I should emphasise that I did not apply it in accordance with the manufacturer's instructions. In addition, the boat did not move much during the Summer, perhaps only 7 days or so.
The growth was so bad that there was noticable vibration under power.

Cleaning the autoprop involved a lot of hard work, scraping, acid, wet and dry (up to 1000), an electric drill with polishing kit, brasso, and anyone who has one will know that they are awkward things to work on, either on or off the boat.

However, here we are ready to go but I am wondering what to put on it, if anything.

What does the panel think is best? (I am leaning towards Dr. B).

Cheers,

Michael.

Well that looks brutal! I have taken the plunge and gone for Dr Barnacle, shouldn't be long before I get it and it looks easy enough to apply, which is good.

I'd say give it a go, I swayed towards it just because it looks so simple to apply!
