On the scrounge for information again. I have two Barlow Winches with handles permantly attached. I can't for the life of me see how they come apart for servicing which they deseperately need. Does anyone have experience of these Circa 1981 winches ? Many thanks

Are they anything like the old Gibb ones with the handles coming from the bottom and a recess in the top to accept a normal winch handle? If so there's a screw and washer in the centre of that hole. Take it out and lever the winch barrel up from the bottom with a catspaw or large screwdriver. Mind you don't drop the pawls over the side. Inside the barrel there is a nylon sleeve, it doesn't turn, it just needs cleaning and some winch grease. Clean the pawls but don't grease them! If they ain't like the Gibbs, just tell me stop making lightning grasps for the wrong end of the stick. (Probably even the wrong stick).

Thanks for the help. No, the handles are on the top and held in place with wicked pin thta sticks up through the top of the winch. There does not seem to be any indentification marks othere than Barlow on the winch. I think I will take a photograph tomorow and see if I can post that.

Thanks for your help but the Hutton site only offers information on post 1983 models. I believe theese are the same age as the boat 1981. The winch mate site just offers a self tailing addition with no info on the winch. There does not seem to be a circlip or a nut holding the thing together.
