My boyfriend and I are looking to buy a barge to convert into a live a board home. We've been looking at fully converted barges and also unconverted. But we cannot find any companies that would do the necessary work to convert a barge that we find and buy. Does anyone know of any companies that might do this? Thanks. /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

It tends not to be ecconomic to employ a yard to do a conversion most people either by one done or do it themselves. As a guide a full interior fit out on a new boats accounts for between 35 & 50% of the cost, conversions can be more as you have to remove much of what is there and work round whats left which often takes more time than starting from scratch. The best people to approach would probably be one of the companies making new barges who might be able to do the complete job, otheerwise you will need to employ different people for each job and do your own project management and design. One advantage of a barge is that they tend to be very square so you may be able to use stock houshold fittings such as kitchen units but with caution as materials like chipboad don't take well to watery environments

For steelworks, and maybe more, contact Mark Montgomery-Smith at Eel Pie Boatyard in Twickenham on 020 8892 3626. Unfortunately this number won't work at the moment as his own barge is on makeover for a couple of weeks but PM me if you want to speak to him more urgently.

Last night on TV was a programme, (Build a new life in the country), about a woman that refitted an 80' barge, located at Gweek, Cornwall. She did a nice job and reckoned it cost £20,000 using local builders.
