Anyone been there recently? We enjoyed a stay a few years ago practicing the ancient art of drying against a wall but I hear recently the fishing boats have taken over the whole wall including the bit once designated for yachts. It looks an alternative to St Vaast but not worth the detour if nowhere to go, can you anchor off the beach?

What about Ommonville or the Anse St Martin, all look alternatives to Cherbourg for a night?

I peddled my bike to barfleur and to the lighthouse from st vaast a few weeks ago.

not many yachts in their and the harbour was full of fishing boats. I did go up the light house.

Omonville is an open roadstead with a breakwater giving some shelter from the prevailing SW. Good for a calm overnight. Restaurant on shore is good. Not a lot else.

Go through the PBO backnumbers for Ken Endean's articles. He has covered just about every anchorage on the peninsular.

Omonville harbour is pretty well full of moorings. There are about 6 surprisingly large visitor mooring buoys [3 of which were occupied by local fishing boats when I was last there]. I had 2 days there sheltering from a SW9 gale and it was safe enough but a bit rough. The visitor mooring buoys can scratch your topsides so it's worth rigging a temporay bowsprit and bull rope.

It can be dreadfully rolly even in light weather. The last time we were there it was flat calm, and the boat next door was rolling horrendously, and the crew were really seasick. We eventually put out a stern anchor to hold her directly into the swell - which worked well, and was not a problem as there was plenty of room for others to swing.

I went in to Barfleur in 1990 it was excellent, but returning 10 years later we found as you said that Fishing boats had taken over the whole wall. we did manage to tie up at the end. We had a pleasant stay but we had a feeling we were not welcome, I have since heard horror stories of yachts having to tie up alongside the lifeboat with the inevitable consequences. Shame because it is a lovely harbour.

Omonville is Ok in the right wind for a overnight stay but not much more IMO.
