Two weeks to go and we're OFF..

Thanks to advice on this forum we're going to head south to Paxos starting with a few short trips to get into the flow, thinking of Ftelias or Pagania on the mainland or maybe Ormos Kalami or Ormus Agni on Corfu. Have read the words of wisdon from Rod the god but any comments from folk that have been to these places would be of a great help. Boat is a Bav 30.

Thanks in advance.

PS
Did RIR sat hard day !! Roll on Greece.

Good first hop is to Agni Bay - heaven on earth. Just looking at a photo of my boat moored on the end of Nikolas's Taverna pier, taken early in the morning with Albania looming out of the mist in the background.

Best stops for the next night are Platerias or Sivota/Mourtos. Both an easy day's sail from Agni - but watch all the ferry traffic. Both good departure points for Lakka on Paxos and if you leave after lunch you should get a brisk sail, although may have difficulty in getting on the quay if there is a flotilla in. Gaios well worth a stop - my preference is in the outer part but if you like to be in the centre of the action go right into town.

Some folks like Parga but I am not so keen - always packed and difficult to moor close in - but town quite interesting. If you only have a week, reverse the route opting for the mainland town you missed on the way out. Obviously 2 weeks is enough to go down to Levkas etc and back, but remember going north can be hard work so leave plenty of time.

Enjoy.

We are currently anchored just around the corner from Agni in Kalami, also lovely, good shelter from some strong North Westerlies in the last few days. You can do a walk from here to Agni and onto Nissaki Beach. Lovely scenery and good tavernas. I would also agree echo what Tranona says about the other places.

2 places I would recommend-

1. Lakka (Paxos), try to get on the jetty, mid way between the ferry and the bin! You dont want to be on either end. If you cant get on the jetty, there are lots of places to anchor.

2. Sivota, End Bay. Quiet. Get in close to the rocks, the end furthest away from the little beach, sand bar. Anchor stern to. water is deep enough toget about 6ft away from the rocks. Make sure your anchor is set. Mainly sand with a little weed.

Stop it, you are making me jealous - we had our boat out there for 10 years - getting withdrawal symptoms!

Spent our first night on board our new boat in 2001 in Agni. Happy days!

Sorry, not to rub it in but we do like it here, can understand why you stayed ten years. Went for a walk this morning, then a long swim now checking out e-mails before a leisurely lunch of dips and fresh bread.

Sounds great

Thanks guys looks like Ormos Kalami or Ormus Agni for the first couple of nights.

As we head south anyone been to Ftelias or Pagania on the mainland as it's close to Albania.

As always thanks in advance.

Been into Pagania - remote and nothing there. Understand Sayiadha (further south and east) is a neat little harbour, but no personal experience.

If you like remote then Ormos Valtou just north of Ignoumenitsa is good - but keep clear of the shoals on the north side of the entrance.

If you fancy a quiet evening away from the tavernas, I can recommend Two Rock Bay - I don't know the local name for it, but look it up in Heikel. It's on the mainland not too far from Parga. There's great snorkeling to be had there too.

I don't particularly like Sayiadha, but an interesting thing to see there is the ghost town up the hill close to the Albanian border. Head up there first thing before the day gets too hot for an interesting excursion.

If you find yourself over on the west coast then Paleokastritsa (sp?) is very picturesque... from the sea, at least. Paxos is well worth a visit, but water-up before you go. Longos is very pretty if you can get in there, and in Lakka I would anchor off if you have a dinghy with outboard.

It's a lovely part of the world. And yes, I'm especially jealous as we had to cancel our holiday there in August for medical reasons :( I hope you have a great time though.

Our first stop from Gouvia was Kalami, well sheltered, a bit weedy so pick your spot. Platerias is a nice harbour, there was room even in August, not touristy, supermarket edge of harbour, nice cafes on the waterfront. In Sivota we spent a lovely night in the little bay between the 2 islands but our favourite place was Moggonisi at the southern end of Paxos. Good shelter, bow in first as the wall has rocks at its base. Memorable night in the taverna flaming brandy music & dancing and no tourists (except us!). Gaios, like a mini venetian canal, busy but worth it for the experience!
