As some of you may know, I sold my F43 recently and am considering, after 10 years with a T34 then an F43 in SCM, trying a stint over to the 'Light' side to try learn to sail - I know, wrong forum.....

I have a friend, whom is a very experienced yacht master sail, whom has foolishly agreed to charter a 40-50ft sailing yacht with me and our SWMBO's for a few weeks next year, to show me the ropes. The plan is, if we like it, we will look to buy a sail boat for say 4-5 years before returning to motor boating later, best laid plans and all that.

So, I would like to start researching and want to sail the Dalmatian coast. I have looked at some websites of course (Sunsail and the like) but if anyone can provide advice on the following it would be much appreciated:

1) LOCATION: What are the best marinas to charter a sail boat from - I am thinking we would fly into Split? Are there better locations to start from?

2) CHARTER: Any recommendations for bareboat charter private/companies?

3) TIMING: What are the best months to go?

4) Best places to see?

Any advice welcome...!

Re: Bareboat Charter Croatia - Dalmatian Coast

The more I research the more I want to go - probably June and even a Cat perhaps, will be PM'ing: Deleted User, Eren and Jez in due course, some comments on threads I have found to date as follows:

I have done Croatia a number of times and for me the two best areas areInstria (fly to Pula) and then Split. Some big marinas but lots of smaller oneswith town quays and public moorings being our favourites. Town quay for a 40ftboat we were paying between €15-€20 per night in 2012. Went into a very poshmarina near split with Deleted User and got the biggest bill of about €75 for thenight. Hvar was mooring bouys tied back to a key and was about €40 a night andvery busy/popular

I have been to the south area, from Cavtat to Hvar. The area isspectacular. Just needs constant awareness about the famous "Bora",the strong wind of the region. Dubrovnik is very nice, but there are no plusesof being there with a boat. You just park the boat to the marina and take thebus to the town, no town quays. The island of Sipan is very quiet and beautifulplace. Mljet island has a national park where you can do cycling aroud a verynice lake. Korcula is quite nice stting with an old town, a must see. Hvar isboth very beautiful and good for party goers. Vis and its second city Komizaare very beautiful places as well.

That was Maslinica on the island of Solta. We were berthed in MarinaFrapa http://www.marinafrapa.com/en/ at Rogoznica (now that was a posh marina)for 4 seasons. There are just too many beautiful islands, anchorages and baysto visit in Croatia to sum in one forum post. All I can say is just go thereand enjoy it.
