Hi

My yacht (29' sloop) has been lifted out for a few weeks and this time (the first time in the three years I've had her) when the weed etc was powerwashed off bare fibreglass is visible in a 6"x3" area rather than the usual thin antifoul..

Do I need to prepare it in any different way? Primer? anything special?

Any worries? There doesn't seem to be any blisters/cracks etc..

Many thanks in anticipation

G'day Richard,

Sounds like the boat has had the Gel-coat removed in the past leaving bare epoxy resin. is the area near the prop wash?

It would be a good idea to scrape off some more antifoul to see if the rest of the hull was ever painted, if not, it will need it, the resin will fail in time if exposed to UV light.

If undamaged, just a light sanding to remove the gloss, a good wash and dry, a wipe with some acetone and apply a suitable 2 pot primer.

Don't forget to use a very good quality breathing filter, not the silly over the nose and under the chin paper jobs. Antifoul is toxic.....

Avagoodweekend.

Some boats (my Sadler 29 included) had clear gelcoat below the waterline which is probably be what you're looking at. No worries; use a primer as OldSaltOz suggests.
